ACADEMICS
PROGRAM MISSION

In our academics program, we aim to equip our mentees with not just suitable preparation for their schoolwork, but also with the skills to develop a meaningful depth of knowledge. This fosters healthy and effective habits, which form the foundation for future learning. We encourage students to share their opinions and personal perspectives, developing great speaking and comprehensive skills. At the same time, we challenge them by asking analytic questions, activating their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. This, along with our personally customizable mentorship curriculum, is what sets Peer2Peer apart.

  • Peer2Peer offers both private and group classes, depending on personal preference.
  • The location of these sessions are flexible. Mentors can travel to wherever is most comfortable for the mentees and their parents.
If not, zoom lessons are also available!
  • The time and duration can be negotiated once applied.
  • Mentors will be assigned based on grade, proficiency and subject.

Peer2Peer believes in fostering a love for reading and writing at a young age. While working on the basics of the English language (i.e. grammar instruction, sentence structures, vocabulary expansion, and simple writing practices), we also try to provide interesting and stimulating literature. Using poems, short stories, and fun news articles that are suitable for their level of proficiency enriches the experience of the student while developing their reading skills. In terms of writing, we will help students in writing fluent, logical sentences, while equipping them with useful writing devices. Mentees will have great tools under their belt when taking exams or writing compositions. We hope that this can not only lead to a blooming interest in reading text, but also their willingness to share their thoughts and challenge different perspectives at a young age. We understand that students have different needs when it comes to the English subject. Peer2Peer welcomes students to voice out the specific areas in which they want to work on more, or even if they want more advanced materials. We have our own selection of exercises, practice books, and materials that have been carefully chosen by students who know the Hong Kong English curriculum best. More challenging materials can even be chosen personally by our mentors based on your requests! Please rest assured that all of our mentors, coming from top schools in Hong Kong and the US, are completely fluent in both English and Cantonese, so communication will not be an issue. Even so, trust that we will find the most suitable mentor that can help their younger peers feel comfortable and engaged during their sessions! Information summary:

  • Topics we cover:
    • Grammar instruction, sentence structure, how to write logical english sentences
    • Writing skills (vocabulary, literary devices, structure)
    • Analytical reading and writing (analyzing suitable texts and literature)
    • Anything that you request! (e.g. helping with homework, preparing mentees for a school project)
  • Time, duration, frequency, location:
    • These all depend on the mentees and their parents. We will match you with a mentor that is available
during the times that you request and have lessons either in-person or through zoom based on your preference.

Math is a subject of problem-solving and critical thinking, which are two of the highest values we aim to equip students with here at Peer2Peer. Our mentees range from grade 3 to grade 8 Secondary (secondary school Form 1 to Form 3 grade 7 to 9), which means the mathematical topics that are covered at school span from basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, to simple statistics. To tackle this, we have our own personal selection of exercises and practices that can help with students’ schoolwork. At the same time, we can also provide them with more advanced or foundational materials, depending on their level of proficiency or personal need.

We hope to make math fun and enjoyable for all of our mentees, as learning from a peer may be different than learning it from a teacher. We encourage our mentees to raise good questions, use different possible methods to solve issues, and to notice hidden connections. Through this, we hope to equip mentees with solid fundamental skills, and a strong mathematical sense that can aid them in their exams and future math courses as well.

Just like other subjects, please rest assured that all of our mentors, coming from top schools in Hong Kong and the US, are completely fluent in both English and Cantonese, so communication will not be an issue. Our mission is to support our mentees as they become members of the Hong Kong community. While not all schools in Hong Kong offer Chinese courses, learning the language can truly help students appreciate the culture and the society in which they live. For mentees who need support in terms of schoolwork, our mentors will provide their own materials and exercises to improve their reading and writing skills, while answering questions or any confusion that may have arisen in the classroom. Peer2Peer also caters to students who wish to learn chinese from the basics, and those who want more accelerated materials.

We hope to develop the skills and habits of mind required for attaining a close reading, analysis and appreciation of literature texts. This could mean reading simple Chinese short stories to understanding 文言文 (Classical Chinese) poems. Mentees will also obtain useful writing, listening and speaking skills that can help them not only in their schoolwork, but also in their daily life as a student in Hong Kong.

Peer2Peer hopes to help mentees understand their world, while also developing the skills to pose questions, plan investigations, and perform experiments to communicate results. Whether it is physics, chemistry or biology, or general science (GS), we focus on explaining concepts and helping our mentees understand their material at school. Mentors can also provide fundamental or advanced practices if a mentee wishes to receive them.

As the science curriculum in Hong Kong varies between schools, it is important to establish convenient and effective communication between mentors and mentees. According to the mentees’ own coursework, mentors will personalize learning materials that are the most suitable for them. While we don’t have a laboratory, we still do our best to help students visualize experiments and understand the scientific concepts behind them. However, if a mentee wanted to explore outside of their syllabus, our mentors would be happy to help as well.
